Principal Solicitor, External Review

  • $124,033 - $165,983 (Plus Superannuation)
  • Fixed Term / 12 months
  • Usual hours of work: Full Time (flexibility may be available)
  • Usual work location: 1 Spring Street, Melbourne (flexibility may be available)
  • The Principal Solicitor is a senior member of the External Review Unit within the Legal and Legislation Branch.

    The Principal Solicitor, External Review will report to the Director, External Review and will assist with the leadership of a team of lawyers and project officers responsible for advising the Department on all external review processes arising from COVID-19, including Ombudsman, WorkSafe and Auditor-General related enquiries, freedom of information requests and all litigation arising from the Department's COVID-19 related activities. In particular, the Principal Solicitor, External Review will assist with liaising with the relevant client areas to assist them in the management of each external review process and to provide legal advice on the management of associated legal risks, collation of documents and the drafting of relevant correspondence. The Principal Solicitor, External Review will also support the Department in preparing all briefings associated with the external review processes.

    The Principal Solicitor, External Review will have supervisory responsibility for lawyers and project officers within the External Review Unit. In particular, the Principal Solicitor, External Review will be responsible for supervising the provision of the legal advice of the lawyers and the work of the project officers within the External Review Team.

    The Principal Solicitor, External Review will also support the Director, External Review as required.

    The key accountabilities of the role will include:

  • Manage complex external review processes and litigation matters and provide risk-based legal advice to mitigate associated risks.
  • Provide authoritative and strategic legal advice on complex and sensitive legal, policy and procedural issues and proposals.
  • Assist the Director, External Review will project managing the Department's engagement in COVID-19 related external review processes, including the generation of reports, maintenance of records management systems and preparation of briefing materials.
  • Manage a team of lawyers and project officers, including supervision of work and people management responsibilities.
  • Liaise with a range of clients across the Department to assist them in managing individual external review processes, including in the coordination of information and advice on risk management.
  • Facilitate the engagement of external law firms including the briefing of work to ensure cost effective and efficient legal services to the department on an as needs basis.
