Employment Type: Temporary Part-Time Dates: From 1 March 2021 until 28 January 2022 with possibility of extension Position Classification: Staff Specialist Hours Per Week: 20 Requisition ID: REQ212812 The Illawarra Ambulatory and Primary Health Care (APHC) Team is currently looking for a part-time Staff Specialist to join the Endocrinology team at Wollongong Hospital for a temporary appointment from 1 March 2021 to 28 January 2022. This position is to cover Long Service Leave (LSL), with the possibility of extension. The successful candidate will be based at the Illawarra Diabetes service, and provide a minimum of 2 outpatient clinics per week; as well as participate in the after-hours endocrinology on-call roster (on a one-in-four basis) for admissions to Wollongong Hospital and for advice to other hospitals within ISLHD. The role also includes support and advice to the rest of the team at the Illawarra Diabetes Service, including to Diabetes Educators and Dietitians. Set times for clinics are required including Monday mornings. This is required in order to run a diabetes outpatient clinic at the Illawarra Diabetes Service and supervise a registrar clinic. The second weekly clinic time can be negotiated subject to clinical need and service requirements. Availability to run a third weekly outpatient clinic would be desirable with further details to be determined. Support for other APHC efforts including improvement of outpatient management and development of broader strategies to address Diabetes care diabetes care and a limited response to other endocrine diseases for APHC across the District forms part of the role. There is an Endocrinology Advanced Trainee and a Basic Trainee that also require supervision during clinic hours and for inpatient consultation. The Illawarra Diabetes Service is also involved in Clinical Trials, and the successful candidate will be expected to help with recruitment for current trials as well as care of patients enrolled in existing trials (training provided; previous experience with clinical trials desirable but not mandatory). The position will be primarily located at the Illawarra Diabetes Service with in-reach to Wollongong Hospital. This may be varied as agreed with the Director of Medical Services and as approved via the Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) to other facilities in ISLHD. Wollongong Hospital is the largest of ISLHD's eight hospitals, treating more than 48,000 patients annually. It is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult intensive care and coronary care units. Wollongong Hospital has a strong affiliation with the University of Wollongong (UOW) and supports the training of Nursing, Medical and Allied Health staff. As such there are teaching and research opportunities through the UOW Graduate School of Medicine.
