About the role
Due to a recent internal promotion, we are currently searching for Orica's next Senior Manager – Safety, Health, Environment and Security at our Kooragang Island Site.
Strategically located at the entrance to the Hunter Valley, Orica Kooragang Island is an integral part of the company’s global operations and makes an important contribution to the local and broader Newcastle community. The facility includes an ammonia plant, three nitric acid plants, two ammonium nitrate plants and a product dispatch facility.
The Senior Manager – SHES will play a key role within the site senior leadership group, and lead a specialist team that drives a continuous improvement approach to assuring compliance with workplace health, safety, environment and industry standards, and reducing the risk of major incidents occurring at the Major Hazard Facility.
The role will lead a SHES team that will manage the core functions including workplace health and safety, major incident risk, site security and response, environment and sustainability, community and stakeholder relations, and security in accordance with Orica’s SHEC Management System site, group and statutory requirements. This role is a key member of the Site Leadership Team and will be a role model for excellence in SHES practices and behaviours. This position is residential, based in Newcastle or surrounds, and will operate on a Monday to Friday standard roster.
What you will be doing
•Provide visible leadership to prevent or correct behaviours or work conditions not consistent with Orica’s SH&E values or standards;
•Develop, provide and continuously improve SH&E KPIs for line management and SH&E support team to identify areas of focus and deliverables;
•Develop and coach SHES team in the provision of SHES advice, support the full utilisation of identified SH&E applications;
•Continuously improve working relationships and organisational stature between site and regulators through engagement programs;
•Assure site compliance with regulatory requirements and nominated industry standards, which collectively form the site’s licence to operate;
•Support the development of clear guidance for operational teams to maintain compliance with workplace health, safety, environment and industry standards, and reducing the risk of major incidents occurring at the Major Hazard Facility;
•Drive programs that improve behavioural compliance with core SHES requirements through the full implementation of behavioural safety initiatives;
•Manage Site Security resources to ensure continual physical security for the site and supporting infrastructure.
•Implement programs to develop and maintain effective and targeted stakeholder engagement and community investments to gain and maintain the trust and support of neighbours and the broader community.
What you will bring
•Role ideally suited to individuals with a minimum of (10) years’ SHES experience in chemical manufacturing or oil and gas.
•Engineering or Science Degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) in the fields related to occupational health and safety, environmental management, risk management or similar.
•Demonstrated technical expertise regarding SHES management systems, process design, management and improvement.
•Ability to present complex information in an understandable and compelling manner.
•Curious and creative mindset, willing to challenge the status quo.
