The Opportunity An exciting opportunity has become available at Seqirus for an experienced Senior Animal Technician (Senior Operator) to work at our facility in Parkville. This is a full time permanent position, and offers you an opportunity to be involved in the Australian Government’s commitment to produce life-saving antivenoms. We are looking for a passionate individual that will compliment an established skilled and close-knit team. Your involvement will include supervising the day to day operations of the Animal Facility, providing input on scientific procedures (research and breeding) and perform high-level technical tasks. You will be responsible for all the administrative duties, the continual training and compliance for all staff to ensure optimal facility function. The Role Reporting to the Team Leader – Animal Services, specific responsibilities in this unique hands-on role will include: Responsible for the day-to-day operations and scientific procedures conducted at Seqirus and ensure they are performed to a high ethical standard in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP’s), the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (“the Code”) and all legal and regulatory guidelines are followed Supervise a small team of operators, including arranging rosters, technical training and environmental monitoring General animal husbandry, which includes cleaning, care and monitoring the health and welfare of a variety of small animals Assist in the maintenance of facility equipment and infrastructure, including cleaning to minimise the risk of cross-contamination, ensuring efficacy and the safety of operations Responsible for the breeding and holding of laboratory animals for use in vaccine development, quality control testing, whilst ensuring the animal welfare and facility requirements are maintained Organise and oversee the collection and delivery of sentinel and water sample programs Compliance with regulations including animal ethics, Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR), Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) & Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Maintain accurate records at all times, both written and electronic to fulfil legal and AEC requirements in a timely manner. Assist with the implementation and review of standard operating procedures and the collation of data for compliance reports Play an active role in ensuring Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) guidelines are always met Communicate and liaise with customers to ensure animal production and testing timelines are met Liaison with researchers regarding their individual requirements and AEC applications Perform staff appraisals and provide regular feedback to staff outside the formal approval appraisal process. Lead the team in the planning and implementation of process improvement activities to achieve measurable results Assist in the continuing education and training of staff to promote high standards of animal care, husbandry and ethics and on-going development of technical expertise Skills and Experience Certificate or Diploma qualification in animal technology or other related fields, or an equivalent combination of demonstrated experience and/or education/training in animal husbandry Previous Supervisory experience in a similar role would be highly regarded Demonstrated technique competencies is highly desirable – IP, IM, & IV injections and IV bleeds in various laboratory animals Understanding or knowledge of quality methods and (Good Manufacturing Processes) GMP principles Sound knowledge of relevant legislation including: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 Vic and Regulations 1997 Regulatory bodies: Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) & Department of Agriculture, Water & Environment (DAWE), Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA) Industry Standards: Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (8th Edition), Code of Practice for the Housing & Care of Laboratory Mice, Rats, Guinea Pigs and Rabbits (2004) Ability to learn and pick up new processes and procedures quickly and effectively Ability to problem solve and think on your feet with a can do attitude Understanding of animal-based quality assurance programs Exceptional written and oral communication skills, coupled with ability to prioritise and complete tasks within scheduled deadlines Intermediate proficiency in the use of MS Office suite of programs Working knowledge of SAP would be advantageous It is an inherent requirement of this position to be vaccinated against Q fever, Tetanus, and Influenza and not have allergies that would preclude you from performing critical animal facility duties. Proof of vaccination will be required or vaccinations will be provided by Seqirus if successful for the position. In addition, you must hold a current Australian drivers licence. Working hours can fluctuate according to schedule requirements, and weekend and public holiday work will be required (rotating basis).
